It is curious that we understand much better than its inventors the way Castrol R works, yet take it for granted.

The idea is not new, and since the advent of the lack of availabity of "pure gasoline", I believe there are more guys than ever doing the same. Castrol POWER1 have been developed with cutting-edge formulation technology, underpinned by more than 100 years' experience in motorcycle lubrication. A long time ago 1982, if my memory serves me i went to darley moor to watch bike racing for the first time , been into it ever since , the smell of castrol r was everywhere, can you still get it? i was always led to believe that the castor based oils r40 and a747 are only for high performance ie high temp high reving engines and if used in low spec engines gt,s ect they will cause to much carbon build up, these types of oils burn at at temps that the gt motors are not capable of dealing with,as i love the smell of castor based oils i put some a747 from my (track rgv)into the tailpipe of my road(standard)rgv and when the bikes cooling down in the garage after a run it smells just like the old days racing, so far i have not tried this in the gt550 but intend to in the to outer pipes soon any thoughs? You're also looking at oils with good flow charateristics, so if its a new engine, i'd be looking at full synths on a race engine. You could always devise a secondary injection system that just squirted a very small amount of castor oil into the inlet ports, or maybe even the exhaust manifold, to get the smell.

I too remember the smell of burnt Castrol R, but that was back in the day when bikes were used every day, engines were regularly de-coked and ordinary oil was still found in pools oozing from the ground. Of course, I also advised them that if they wanted to attract a member ( or ex-member) of the armed forces then the smell of chordite would also get the guys, or gals, queueing up to find out what was going down. Put a drop in the LC tank when I knew it was going to do a lot of miles , and was getting a few tankful's of fresh super before it was parked up for any length of time. and yep stick it in your road bike i used to put it in my busa though i had to ride up the road turn round and go back to get the smell mmmmm mmmmmm i can see Ivan major , Peter colins and Chris morton sideways .As every cook knows, fats and oils thicken when you put them in the fridge and leave gummy, varnish-like deposits when you heat them in a pan.

As mentioned earlier I even put it in my mower to remind my of Lydden Hill, I do remember the lads at Roys of Hornchurch in 1971 ( Royspeed ) told us that R would not do the crank seals any good ?In the case of Sir Charles Cheers Wakefield, later Baron Wakefield of Hythe, the sweet smell of success was more than a metaphor. Always amuses me that people 'put a bit in' their tanks, lowering the fuel content in the fuel air mix.

Have you put some petrol and 'Bean Oil' in a glass jar, shaken it up then left it for a while to see what happens?Have run 747 for over 10 years in our 2 stroke trials bikes and also KX 500 supermoto monster, it is perfect for 'em. Castrol R used to always separate from the fuel that's why we had to shake our bikes before we started them (I still do that now!
